Ipe’s Pick: The Bride vs. Gogo Yubari and Crazy 88 in Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003)

I’m not a huge follower of kung fu movies but if all are as fun and as awesome as Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, I guess I’m missing a lot. I could easily choose any sequence from the movie and take it as my pick but I’m choosing The Bride’s violent, colossal, bloody, comical sword fight with a large group of masked yakuzas called Crazy 88 and O-ren Ishii’s insane bodyguard Gogo Yubari whose character is a reference to the iconic giggling Japanese high school girl.

This scene resonates the film’s overall strong sense of style. First on the details: from the gorgeous set pieces, costume (The Bride’s yellow outfit is a throwback to Bruce Lee’s), playful soundtrack and sound effects and to the really amusing fight choreography.
