Women’s Month Feature: An Introduction
by Jay Santiago
Cinema in 2010 began with a historic bang as Kathryn Bigelow struck gold at the Academy Awards with The Hurt Locker, obliterating the door of the previously “Men’s Only Club” of Best Director Oscar winners. That she did so tackling subject matter traditionally tagged as male territory magnified this feat, but those familiar with her entire body of work would recognize that she’s long been adept at serving astounding adrenaline fixes on film. Point Break and Strange Days were the movies that introduced me to Bigelow, and while they focused mainly on men, the female characters in both films served as powerful moving forces, subtly steering the stories (and even the men) where they needed to go.
As March comes to a close, Pelikula Tumblr commemorates Women’s Month by officially welcoming two new female reviewers to the fold (Patricia Valerio and Carina Santos who join resident estrogen agent Danielle Veluz). With them, we’re also proudly saluting Bigelow and her sisters in cinema, female directors whose uncompromising creations serve as reminders that women deserve to be on top more often.
